Elon Musk’s SpaceX has told investors that it plans to launch a terrestrial Starlink mobile service that will compete directly with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

During SpaceX’s recent IPO roadshow, company COO Gwynne Shotwell reportedly told investors that Starlink will launch a retail wireless service in the U.S. with its own terrestrial mobile network.

Up until now in the U.S., the world’s largest Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite broadband company has only partnered with incumbents including T-Mobile, integrating direct-to-device (D2D) satellite data capabilities into their mainly 5G services. Starlink’s D2D satellite service enables these companies to deliver connectivity to customers in remote areas with little or no access to cellular towers.

T-Mobile has even featured Starlink-enabled D2D in its national advertising.
