Is the U.S. economy in recession? For several years, there has been a disconnect, often politicized, between consumer sentiment and monthly jobs and growth data released by the federal government.
And the data itself often seems conflicted — last week, for example, Momentum Commerce, which manages around $7 billion of sales on Amazon for popular retailers, said first-day sales for Amazon’s four-day “Prime Day” shopping event were down 41% YoY.
Amazon disputed this report, claiming strong uptake of items including Apple AirPods and Amazon Fire TV Sticks that it said ended up pushing Prime Day to “record sales.”
At least as far as the media and entertainment consumer is concerned, the data might not matter — it’s how everyone feels about spending money in the near term.
